A round reform
.. dated on the 6th April, 1989 Three Months have passed. From the 6th February till the 5th April political parties and the Catholic Church met in Warsaw for the purpose of reforming the political landscape in Poland. Leading parties were at the one side the well- known PZPR, however the oppositional Solidarność was invited too. During a long period of time, the population demonstrated against the monopoly of the communist party. Therefore, the state was under pressure and with the aid of the church plans for this political meeting were made since 1988. From the 6th April working groups were formed, which had to find solutions about the economic, political and social future of Poland. Well, in the eyes of the opposition the round table was an outstanding achievement. At least semi- democratic votes were guaranteed following the principle 65: 35. 65 per cent of the mandates in the parliament were given to the communist parties, but 35 per cent of the mandates were given to the people. Another result of the Round Table was the creation of a senate with complete free votes. The opposition became incredible popular in this votes. It might be even possible, that they achieve an overwhelming majority of the votes and have the ability to elect a president. Even regarding about the possibility to report about the meetings is a great advantage towards a sovereign state. From now on, the opposition has access to the mass media. It becomes clear, that the forbidden Solidarność will be generally accepted by the state in the early future. Right now, we want to find out what the Polish think about the Round Table: Was this a big step towards democracy or just hot air and empty promises of a one party- state? by Timo |
