Tom Robinson worked on a cotton field during this year's fall where he came to know Mayella Ewell, the victim. The 25-year-old man, father of three children, is a criminally recordes offender. He was charged earlier for grievious body harm during a fight with another man who tried to stab him. Although evidently acting in self-defence Tom Robinson and his opponent were convicted. Unable to raise funds to balance the fine he performed a community service instead. Now he was charged for sexual offence and when the trail began Tom Robinson was taken to Maycomb, expecting an outburst of fury within the lynchmob which - in the end - didn't occur. Not really sure what might would happen his attorney Atticus spent the night in front of his cell. The crowd still high on emotions diminished. The city full of highly emotional rubbernecking crowds was curious to see what would happen to Tom Robinson. Would he be sent to jail or was another verdict possible? Nobody knew. The court with the sitting judge Taylor was divided in two separate areas, one for black and one for white people. Tom Robinson was accused for raping Mayella Ewell on November 21, 1936. The victim and her father, a violent alcoholic, were living under very poor conditions. Mayella Ewell indicted Tom Robinson for intruding their house before he hit and raped her. Tom Robinson on the contrary alleged that Mayella Ewell turned him on. Now as there is one word against another it is very much unclear if Tom Robinson will be finally convicted. |
